Happy April and happy first day of National Poetry Writing Month! Since you’re all busy, we’ll get right to it. Each day in April 2022 there will be a new parent/child themed writing prompt here for you. Here’s day one:

If your house looks like mine, then this one should be easy. Write a poem about the nearest baby/child related object and the relationship it has to your child.

The relevance of the object to the child can, but doesn’t have to be obvious. For example, my toddler loves the vacuum cleaner, not something where your first thought would be that’s baby related.

Please remember you can use this prompt in it’s entirety, parts of it or do whatever you want with it, it’s just here to inspire you. Please post your poems in the comments below or on your own blogs and tag us with the hashtag #MomPrompts2022. Happy writing!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Or as my little one says, happy to you!

The beginning of the year kind of tends to get away from me, so this year I’ve made a very simple New Year’s Resolution; renew my library card. Hopefully accomplishing this simple task will give me a boost to power through to February and March.

We have lots of exciting things planned for this year and, as opposed to last year, we have a plan to accomplish them, not just good intentions! The first one, coming up in April, will be the relaunch of our Mom Prompts series just in time for National Poetry Writing Month, so keep your eyes peeled for updates on that.

We wish all our readers a happy, healthy year!

Tis the season…for depression

Tis the season…for depression

The following is NOT medical advice. If you think you or someone you know is suffering from depression, please seek professional help.

Many parents struggle during the holiday season. We try to put a brave face on for our little ones, but we may be harming ourselves even more by doing so. Here are five steps you can take to help lift your spirits.

1. Weep

Let it out! Show your feelings! You are not a robot and from time to time you will have these pesky things called emotions and they won’t always be nice. Be open about your pain, share it with your spouse or, where appropriate, with your children. This is your wake up call! Don’t ignore it!

2. Sleep, eat, hydrate

When suffering from depression it’s tempting to stay in bed all day and marinate in negativity. Keeping a regular routine can help combat depression. Try to get the recommended amount of sleep, food and water. If possible get 30 minutes of fresh air every day by taking a quick walk. Ask your spouse to encourage and support your healthy habits.

3. Renew your mind

Try something new! Sometimes the easiest way to get out of an emotional rut is to stop focusing on it. Do that thing that you’ve always wanted to do. Let your kids invent a silly new game and subject yourself to playing it while they change the rules every five minutes. You might even have a laugh with them.

4. Be sober

Stay away from alcohol. This will not help you combat depression, it will make it worse.

5. Get help

If it takes a village to raise a child, why shouldn’t it continue to take a village to support an adult? We are not meant to fight these battles alone. Even of you feel silly, insignificant or stupid, reach out to someone and talk it through. Please!

Your Personalized Master Shopping List!

Your Personalized Master Shopping List!

Flash back to last week, I’m standing in the middle of Aldi, my toddler is screaming, “Cookie!” at the top of his lungs and I cannot for the life of me remember what I’m forgetting to buy, but I know I’m forgetting something (it was mustard, but that’s not the point).

If I had sat down and taken the time to write a shopping list this probably could have been avoided, but even then, between trying new recipes and the band of locusts that must live somewhere in my house, plus never having a quiet minute to write that list every week, I still end up forgetting things.

Solution? A set master shopping list. For about one month I saved all my receipts and then wrote my master shopping list based on my weekly purchases. I was also able to see what products I was spending the most money on and cut a few things that were not necessary every week.

I still have to keep track of bi-weekly and monthly purchases, and add any new things I might not have if I’m trying out a new recipe, but I have not forgotten a weekly staple since making that list.

What do I talk to my baby about?

What do I talk to my baby about?

I’ve heard parents pondering this question a lot. What do I say to my baby? The short answer; tell them everything.

For example, on a stroll through the woods this morning, my two year old and I talked about the different colored leaves, the sticks and rocks on the ground, the dogs we saw and the big cars we were going to see later. My little one understood and repeated some of the things I said, occasionally added a few words of his own and at some point just babbled for about 5 minutes.

I tried to listen and pick out anything that sounded remotely like a word, but couldn’t, so to encourage him to continue I simply said, “Mhm. Uhu.” I kept making eye contact with him and nodding my head, showing that I was listening, engaged and that he had all my attention.

Use whatever you have at your disposal. Count mailboxes, cars, houses, point out different colors, different cars and trucks (for example, cement mixers or garbage trucks, something that is clearly very different from a normal car). Narrate your entire day!

Best Corn Chowder – EVER!

Best Corn Chowder – EVER!

Without exaggeration, and forgoing the long story of why, I have been searching for a corn chowder recipe for about a decade now. Not just any corn chowder recipe of course, THE corn chowder recipe. Alas, the specific recipe I was hoping to get is no longer accessible to me, but considering the simplicity of this one, that I have tried and tested several times over, it may even be better than what I was hoping to find.

The recipe is from Spend with Pennies and I can tell you right now, I am on this website all the time. They have great tasting, cheap and easy recipes. Here’s the direct link to the corn chowder recipe that I have fallen in love with. Happy trying!

Best Bread Boxes Under £30

The other day I baked some bread and I really did not consider a very important aspect; how do I store my bread so it doesn’t go bad?

In the past the answer for me would have been in the plastic bag the bread was bought in, but when making it at home that is not an option. So I did some research and found that old fashion bread boxes are making a come back! Here’s my top five picks:

  1. KitchenCraft Stay Fresh Expanding Bread Keeper with Bread Slicer Guide on sale today for £13.80! (usually £21.99): The bread slicer guide is an awesome feature that I definitely need, because otherwise my slices turn out too thick, too small and it’s a mess.
  2. ""LARS NYSØM Bread Box on sale today for £19.99! (usually £37.99): This bread box is amazing! Besides the 47% savings today, it comes with a reusable bread bag and the lid is a cutting board so you will always have a dedicated place to slice your bread.
  3. Calitek Bread Bin £24.95 (also available in a cute retro design for £26.95): This vintage design steel bread bin is nice and roomy, also comes in purple and in a retro design. Takes up little space and is easy to clean.
  4. Space Saving Extra Large Vertical Bread Bin on sale today for £23.99! (usually £29.99): This one also comes with a lid that doubles as a cutting board, is space saving and fits two loaves!
  5. HOMION BAMBOO BREAD BOX for £19.99: This is the only wooden box in my top five, there is another one I was looking at, but it’s a little more expensive. This bread box can sit two different ways and opens as a drop down or lift up fashion accordingly.
Review: Easy Artisan Bread by I Heart Naptime

Review: Easy Artisan Bread by I Heart Naptime

Lately my toddler has been very into cooking, to the point where he runs through the house screaming “coooook!” until you get a pot out for him and help him stir some cheerios around in it for hours. My thoughts on this? What an opportunity for mom to try out some of the three thousand recipes she has pinned on Pinterest!

I didn’t want to jump in too deep, because I’m definitely not a great cook and you never know when the little one will get bored, so I chose this three ingredient Artisan bread recipe by I Heart Naptime. Lots of measuring, pouring and stirring to keep baby happy!

Full disclosure, this was my second try ever baking bread. I tried making some burger buns a few months ago and the recipe was too complicated for me. It required multiple kneads and risings, it was an all day ordeal and I definitely did not want to repeat that.

The results of our bread baking were phenomenal! The instructions, when carefully read, were easy to follow and the bread did not turn out like cake (which my aforementioned burger buns unfortunately did, that’s the result of too much kneading). It’s basically made foolproof for fools like me who think they can bake bread. Just measure, pour, stir, let it rise for a few hours, shape, bake, cool and eat. Easy-peasy, toddler and mom approved!
