This one is brought to you by my morning and works best with toddler-aged children:
Write a poem about silly things that make your child cry. For example, my little one had a meltdown this morning, because I don’t have six fingers on one hand and the blocks didn’t stack the way he wanted.
Pick one thing or make a rhyming list, most importantly have fun with it!
“And I-
I took the road less traveled by”;
past my friends and family,
past the damned society,
trading heels for worn-out shoes,
normal sleep for endless nights,
lay-ins for coffee at sunrise,
clean shirts for jam smeared smiles-
A ton of small and larger things,
things I cannot live without me thinks,
but wouldn’t you know it, in the end,
more happiness than I could dream of
waited right around the bend.

Write about a time where you took the road less traveled by as a parent, something you chose not to do in order to spend more time with your kid(s). This could be something small like eating less sugar to something big like quitting your job. Remember, have fun with it (if you want) and keep it friendly.
The light so bright,
the noise all wrong,
a strange woman is singing a song,
I crinkle my nose,
let out a scream,
somebody wake me up from this dream!
I try to make the sound again-
but a soothing, warm arm,
shields me from harm,
and rocks me back to sleep.
So I’ve been doing NaPoWriMo on and off for the better part of a decade now and this year I really wanted to make it my own by writing my own prompts. As a new mama I couldn’t think of a better way to do that, than by creating my own mama/baby (or papa/baby) centered poetry inspirations. Please remember these prompts can be used completely or in part, followed strictly or utterly ignored (as long as you keep with the parent/baby theme). Please keep it light and friendly!
Today’s prompt is “something new”. Interpret it any way you like! For example, you could write a poem about buying new baby clothes, holding your child for the first time or, for something that could potentially be really funny, how your child reacts to new things be it a new toy, food, grass, anything really. Have fun!
